Oscar Peñaranda

Oscar Peñaranda
Sketch by Mel Veracruz
OSCAR PEÑARANDA, longtime community activist, advocate for ethnic studies in the schools, teacher and writer, has two books recently published by San Francisco publisher/distributor T'Boli Publishing: Seasons By the Bay, a collection of interrelated stories and Full Deck (Jokers Playing), a collection of poetry.

To order, email: oscar_penaranda@nhusd.k12.ca.us or tiboli@comcast.net
send $3 shipping plus
$13 for Full Deck (jokers playing)
$17 for Seasons by the Bay to:
Oscar Peñaranda 586 Hamlin Way
San Leandro, Ca., 94578
Both books have been long anticipated by the Asian American literary community. Often compared to Filipino novelists Carlos Bulosan and N.V.M. Gonzalez, Peñaranda's poems and stories are evocative of past days spent laboring in the fields of California and in Alaskan canneries, but they are told with a voice that transcends time and place. His poems, Peñaranda explains, allow readers to "co-create," to make meaning of their own by bringing their individual experiences and perspectives to the poems, thereby deriving personal interpretations of each word, each line.

Well known for his humor and sometimes unbelievable stories that he weaves, Peñaranda has developed quite a following. Currently a teacher of Filipino in James Logan High School in Union City, Peñaranda is a mentor to students and fledgling teachers as well. As the instructor of the multicultural segment for new teachers, a lecturer and speaker for various conferences, and in his continual role as advocate for equity and social justice within the educational system and in our greater society, Peñaranda is recognized as a mentor and intellect, as well as a master story-teller.

******************Postcards from Ethiopia
December 25, 2003

Ethiopia has an ancient Christian Orthodox tradition. We'll celebrate X-mas January 6th, no meat on Wednesdays and Fridays. Kaffa (coffee) originally came from here & the custom is to accept three cups because the 3rd bestows a blessing. In cities, signs are in Amharic script & English. My working days at the Ministry of Education are Mon.-Sat., 8-5. There goes my pre-planned weekends.

Hi PAWA members:

My new title here is "Weizero" (literally "Lady" in the ancient tradition, now the equivalent of "Mrs."). Ethiopia's national epic recounts the Queen of Sheba & Jerusalem's King Solomon, and hence the origins of Ethiopia's Solomonic dynasty. "Ras" is a princely title. Ras Tafari founder of Rastafarians, a cult, was Emperor Haile Selassie's name before he was crowned emperor in 1930. For centuries, Ethiopia was the crossroads of African, Indian & Middle East commerce.

("Bride" by Addis Gebru.)
