The P.A.W.A. Inc. Calatagan Award

2500 years ago our ancestors left a literary legacy excavated in the caves of
Calatagan, Batangas, Philippines. Archeologists discovered a palayok
earthenware with a Baybayin inscription written along the rounded shoulder
surface of the pot.

P.A.W.A's Calatagan award
(created by San Frandcisco Bay Area ceramics artist Sharlyn Shegoian)
is inspired by this artifact. The pottery (palayok) speaks
to the utilitarian and universal usage of this kind of pottery the whole world over.
Locally crafted, the shape lends itself to many functions: cooking vessel,
storage bin, writing material. The inscribed Philippine ancient writing embedded
in the clay is symbolic of its rich and enduring aspect.
